How to transfer a domain from Bluehost

Transfer of domain names may take anywhere from 3 to 8 days to complete. You will need to be sure that the following apply to the domain registered with Bluehost:

  • The domain must be more than 60 days old.
  • The domain has been "Unlocked" for transfer at Bluehost.
  • The domain is showing your current e-mail for the admin contact in the whois as that is where the authorization email will be sent.
  • The domain must not be too close to its expiration date, as Bluehost will normally autorenew domains at 15 days.

To begin, go to the Help center on the Bluehost site and click on the "Domain Manager" tab and login to your account, or instead you may login to your cPanel and under the Domains menu select "Domain Manager". This will display your domain or any domains you have registered with their registrar (FastDomain).

Then select the Privacy tab and be sure privacy is disabled.

Then select the Contacts tab, make sure all this info is filled in correctly, Registrant, Admin, Billing, especially the email address for the administrative contact.

If you were also moving your hosting to another host, it is recommended you update your Name Servers also before the transfer.

Then select the Transfer EPP tab, copy this code, you will need it to start the transfer.

Select the Lock tab, if your domain is locked you must UNLOCK your domain name.
That should be all on the Bluehost side.

Now wait a short time and check the Whois info for your domain. You can do this at http://www.whois.net/ or http://whois.domaintools.com/ or other sites, make sure everything shows up and is correct.

You can now submit a transfer request for the domain from within your NityGity account by clicking on the Transfer your domain tab. After the transfer is requested you will need the Auth/EPP code, you will need to enter it in the account under Transfers in Progress. Once the code is entered then the process will begin. You will also receive a transfer-approval email to the listed administrative contact for the domain. After the transfer is confirmed the losing registrar has 5 days to release the domain. If everything is ok, the domain will be released and added to your NityGity account.
